NES ROMS

I recently build an arcade cabinet and have everything setup. However, I’m having difficulties getting the roms to work. I am using Ubuntu, but can use WINE and bring the retro back to the waiting game.
I tried to use MAME, but that didn’t work with my NES roms. I’m thinking MAME is just for arcade games themselves. I am mostly interested in playing Nintendo and Super Nintendo games.
Does anyone know of an emulator that will play those games? And does anyone know of a Front End GUI that would be able to use that emulator?

Legend of Dragoon or Golden Sun or Chrono Trigger?

I’ve been looking for a handheld good enough to emulate SNES games with as little chopping and slowdown as possible. The PSP is kinda good, but it’s terrible with bigger games like Donkey Kong Country, F-Zero and Yoshi’s Island.
